NFL 'currently talking' with Verizon to distribute programming on tablets

Ah, so now we understand Verizon's intentions to hastily roll out LTE service to NFL cities. The NFL, which has sided with Sprint over the years when it comes to cellular distribution of content, is apparently in even deeper talks with newfound partner Big Red in order to get its prized content into even more hands. As the idea of watching NFL games on-the-go because more and more sensible, the league is apparently mulling the decision to distribute games (and potentially more) on the next big thing. You know, tablets. Brian Rolapp, the NFL's senior vice president of media strategy, recently said the following: "The NFL will be on a tablet. It's a question of what shape or form. We are currently talking to Verizon about it." VZW declined to comment on the rumblings, but it's really not a shocker -- the carrier's doing everything it can to get a live LTE network here in the States, and inking a deal with America's most popular sporting league would obviously bring in boatloads of revenue. The real question is this: what tablet is the NFL eying, and if it's not the Samsung Galaxy Tab, what's Verizon's second tablet going to be? Inquiring minds would love to know.NFL 'currently talking' with Verizon to distribute programming on tablets originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 30 Sep 2010 20:17:00 EDT. A photo tour of the Mozilla offices in Mountain View, California

Filed under: Mozilla, BrowsersLast week, while I was in San Francisco for the IE9 beta thing, I was fortunate enough to also visit the Mozilla offices in Mountain View, California. I was mostly there to interview three big-wigs from the Firefox development team, but I also managed to take a few photos! This means that this week's Firefox Friday takes the form of a photo tour.

I have provided extensive commentary for each photo in the gallery, so take your time and enjoy the brand new, beautiful offices of Mozilla.

Meego flashed to Nexus One, Dell Streak, HTC Desire

Got an HTC Desire, Nexus One, or Dell Streak burning a hole in your pocket? Wish there was something you could run on it besides Android? Probably not, but for those of you out there who just can't stand running stock anything on your devices, why not take the plunge and install Meego?

Anybody else think that the Dell Streak pictured on the Meego Wiki page could use a serious screen cleaning?

GoPro releases its budget-friendlier $179 HD Hero 960, teases 3D case for moneybags

It's been almost two months since GoPro announced it'd be releasing a cheaper helmet cam, the HD Hero 960, positioning it beneath the $299 and 1080p HD Hero we enjoyed last year and give those doing professional stunts on amateur budgets a chance to capture their glory. Now here it is, yours for the taking today -- if you don't mind a resolution capped at 1280 x 960 and a deleted "Hero Bus" expansion port, meaning no external displays or batteries. That port is what you'll need to use the company's next accessory, a dual camera mount shown off at Interbike (and pictured below) pairing two of the HD Heros to film in 3D. You'll need to manually stitch the resulting footage together, but there is at least a sync cable included so that the two start and stop at the same time -- something sadly lacking on the Tachyon XC 3D. That mount is set to retail for $99, but the requirement for dual $299 cameras will price this out of most budgets. However, the $179 MSRP on the HD Hero 960 makes it a compelling alternative to Contour's $220 720p ContourHD.

Flying Humvee a step closer to reality, still seems like a really bad idea

It looks like AAI Corp has, indeed, landed the contract for feasibility studies of the Transformer flying Humvee project, which as far as we can tell takes a lightly armored (if armored at all) four man vehicle and puts it in the air, practically begging to be hit by a rocket-propelled grenade. And if that doesn't sound sketchy enough, keep in mind that among the design considerations are gas tanks in the craft's wings which, as Spencer Ackerman at Wired points out, would make really obvious targets. The testing should last about a year, and cost DARPA a cool $3 million. If all goes well, AAI could have a partial prototype in 2013.Flying Humvee a step closer to reality, still seems like a really bad idea originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 30 Sep 2010 01:46:00 EDT. Simulate your lottery balls for the next 10 years, then realize you should quit while you're ahead

Filed under: Fun, Utilities
Using the Incredibly Depressing Mega Millions Lottery Simulator you can feed your favorite balls into a program that then runs them through 10 years of simulated lottery draws. You are then shown an utterly mollifying breakdown of all 1040 draws.

At the bottom you can see how much money the next ten years will cost you, and how much you stand to gain. For $1040 spent, the average winnings are only $90. After 10 page reloads, my maximum winnings were a massive $114.

With a truly minuscule return rate of 10%, you'd really be better off gambling on almost anything else. You'd certainly be better off playing roulette or poker at a casino, that's for sure. But, having said that, you have to be in it to win it!

Google Docs gets six new fonts, including Calibri, courtesy of Google Font API

Filed under: Text, Google, web 2.0It's about time! You can now choose from almost twice as many fonts when editing a Google Docs document. Calibri, Cambria, Droid Serif, Droid Sans, Corsiva and Consolas are now available. Such magic is brought to us via the Google Font API.

Curiously, only the Droid fonts show up in the Google Font Directory, but whether that's for licensing reasons or not I don't know. Perhaps it just hasn't been updated yet.

Anyway, choice is great and all -- they're working on adding more fonts and support for other character sets! -- but the most important thing is that imported Microsoft Word docs written in Calibri will now import properly into Google Docs. Nintendo shows off special edition Super Mario Bros. DSi and DSi XL

Yeah, Super Mario Bros. was kind of a big deal, and we can't fault Nintendo for wanting to celebrate: September 13th marked the 25th anniversary of the game's launch, and Nintendo is pushing out special editions of the DSi and DSi XL (pictured) to celebrate, along with some pretty sweet swag. We mentioned the handhelds this morning, but now we've got a couple pictures -- way to play it subdued, Nintendo. Unfortunately, the consoles are for Japan only, but what we're particularly digging is this Super Mario Collection Special Pack that Nintendo will be launching alongside. The pack will include a version of Super Mario All-Stars for the Wii, a soundtrack CD, and a "Super Mario History, 1985 to 2010" booklet with some unreleased materials like initial development planning sheets handwritten by Shigeru Miyamoto himself. Again, announced for Japan only. Sounds like the import industry is going to be hot this October when these things land! Gallery: Nintendo shows off special edition Super Mario Bros. ToVieFor: Entertainment Shopping Meets High Fashion (With Cheap Handbags Galore!)

"Entertainment Shopping" is one of the more controversial genres of startups emerging on the web. The basic premise: you pay for a chance to get something at far cheaper than it normally sells for, but there's a risk that you'll come away with nothing. It's part gambling, part bargain hunting and it's proved to be very popular, with sites like Swoopo leading the charge and other sites bringing the model to hotels and other verticals. And today, TechCrunch Disrupt Finalist ToVieFor is bringing entertainment shopping to a new market: high fashion.

If you like Gilt Groupe (a site that offers high-fashion items in fire-sales), this should be right up your alley. Log onto the site, and you'll see an array of high-end handbags and accessories being sold off at a potentially steep discount. If you want to buy one (or at least, a chance to buy one), you need to buy some ToVieFor credits, which run 99 cents and are cheaper in bulk. And then you can get down to business.

Android ad impressions have grown 996 percent on year, Millennial says

 The sales numbers keep pouring in, and it is nothing but good news for Android. Backing that up are ad impression statistics from mobile ad firms, and Millennial Media is reporting huge growth for Android. Overall, Android devices accounted for 26 percent of all devices that viewed ads, and increase of seven percent month-over-month. As for ad impressions, Android saw a 39 percent jump month-over-month, which would indicate that people are using their phones to browse the web more than ever. The most striking number is that Android ad impressions have exploded by a whopping 996 percent since the beginning of the year.In addition, the Motorola became the third largest manufacturer and the venerable Droid became the phone with the second highest mobile impressions with nine percent, presumably losing the top spot to the iPhone. Any way you cut it, these numbers are great and show the strength of the Android browsing experience across all the carriers. Also, it reinforces just how vital the Droid and Verizon's marketing push have been to Android's successes as a platform. Click past the link for some additional bits of information. Direct3D 10 and 11 API now natively supported by Linux via Gallium3D

Filed under: Developer, Games, Linux, MicrosoftIn one fell swoop, it seems like proper, contemporary 3D gaming could be coming to a Linux distro near you.

Unlike Wine, this implementation of Direct3D under Gallium3D is an actual, native port of the DirectX APIs. There's no emulation involved -- Gallium3D just acts as a 'very thin wrapper,' allowing developers easy access to Direct3D's goodies.

Luca Barbieri, the developer behind this new code commit, has a lot to say about Direct3D versus OpenGL, which might pain some open source advocates: "Thanks to a very clean and well-though design done from scratch, the Direct3D 10/11 APIs are vastly better than OpenGL and can be supported with orders of magnitude less code and development time."

Then speaking about why Direct3D will be the graphics API of choice, when developing for Linux, Luca continued the barrage: "A mature Direct3D 10/11 implementation is intrinsically going to be faster and more reliable than an OpenGL implementation, thanks to the dramatically smaller API and the segregation of all nontrivial work to object creation that the application must perform ahead of time."

As I understand it, Wine can't yet take advantage of this new development -- but as it stands, you can now leap right in and start programming a 3D Linux application using Mesa and the Direct3D state tracker. Acer unveils AMD-infused Aspire Z3100 AIO, Revo 3700 nettop now available for $349

Can you smell it in the air? Autumn is most assuredly here. Sure, you can deduce as much from equinoxes or changing leaves, but if you ask us, it's almost just as precise to go by a new, pre-holiday product cycle. Acer's taken the cue with two new desktop SKUs -- one each in the nettop and all-in-one categories. First with the latter: the 21.5-inch AZ3100 all-in-one (pictured). A tier lower than the AZ5700, this one lacks the multitouch and TV tuner, and instead utilizes a 2GHz AMD Athlon II 170u processor, NVIDIA GeForce 9200 graphics, 3GB RAM, and 500GB HDD. Add in a DVD drive, webcam, HDMI, six USB 2.0 ports, Windows 7 Home Premium, and a side chassis for "cable management." It does best its older brother in the price category, though, at just $599 -- about five Benjamins lower.

As for the Aspire Revo 3700, it was actually announced earlier this month, but now we've got the skinny on this book-sized nettop's price and availability. That'd be $349 for the tag, and a street date of approximately... now, according to the press release. Speaking of which, all pertinent paperwork can be found after the break. CodeBurner puts Web language reference information at your fingertips

Filed under: Developer, Search, web 2.0
CodeBurner is a neat tool for rapidly checking a ton of CSS and HTML reference information, including compatibility, functionality, and more. It's available as a Firefox add-on or a Firebug plug-in, and as an Adobe AIR application, OS X Dashboard Widget, or Opera add-on.
I tested the Firebug variant, because I use Firebug for all of my Web debugging needs. And indeed, CodeBurner adds a nice, comprehensive reference layer. I click any page element (or search for an element), and get a list showing the selected element and telling me about it, showing what are the attributes defined for this element, what other attributes may be defined for it (i.e, are valid but aren't specified in the site markup), and what styles and selectors apply to this element.
Next to each of these, I can see browser compatibility information for select browsers. For example, I had no idea the "text-align" style is considered "buggy" under IE7 - now I know.
Each style and attribute gets just a single line of text, but if you want more information, just click the more link. New cloud computing algorithm successfully computes two-quadrillionth digit of pi

Filed under: Developer, Fun, Yahoo!Using a handy algorithm that splits a calculation into thousands of little intermediary processes, a researcher at Yahoo has used a cluster of 1,000 computers to calculate the 2,000,000,000,000,000th digit of pi. Not all two quadrillion digits -- just that one digit (which is a binary 0, if you're wondering).

The calculation was made possible by Hadoop, an open source implementation of Google's extensively-used MapReduce. Yahoo is now also presumably working on something that will make use of it (but considering Bing now powers Yahoo search, I'm not quite sure what they'd be using it for!)

As for whether the 2,000,000,000,000,000th digit of pi actually has a use, I'll leave as an exercise to you guys. Incidentally, earlier this year, pi was calculated to 2.7 trillion digits on a normal desktop PC!New cloud computing algorithm successfully computes two-quadrillionth digit of pi originally appeared on Download Squad on Sat, 18 Sep 2010 09:00:00 EST. 64-bit Linux kernel exploit in the wild, allows local user root escalation

Filed under: LinuxIf you're running a 64-bit Linux kernel, update it now.

There's a new local root exploit, and it seems like Ksplice has yet again managed to get their advertisement fix onto the front page of Slashdot. Normally such an arcane bug wouldn't be an issue, but the example exploit leaves an open backdoor even after the bug has been patched -- lovely.

It's an escalation exploit, so a user still needs to gain local user access to the system -- but still, you're encouraged to update any and all 64-bit Linux systems that you own, especially if they're public, shared servers.64-bit Linux kernel exploit in the wild, allows local user root escalation originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 21 Sep 2010 10:00:00 EST. Sharp announces Galapagos e-reading tablets: 5.5 and 10.8 inches, getting e-bookstore in December

Sharp has just taken the veils off its bold new e-reader devices, dubbing them both Galapagos in honor of the evolution the company believes they represent. The 5.5-inch Mobile version (pictured above) has a delightfully dense 1024 x 600 LCD screen, while its 10.8-inch Home sibling offers a very decent 1366 x 800. There's 802.11b/g WiFi on both, while the littler slate is also enriched with a navigational trackball. Sharp's emphasis here really seems to be on the cloud-based ecosystem it's creating for these "terminal" devices -- 30,000 newspapers, magazines and books have been lined up for its planned December launch and an "automatic scheduled delivery" facility will help you get at them as soon as the latest issue's ready for consumption. Sadly, we should note that this is specifically tailored to suit the Japanese market, which makes an international release seem somewhat unlikely. For a size comparison between the two tablets and the full press release, jump past the break.Gallery: Sharp Galapagos e-readers press imagesContinue reading Sharp announces Galapagos e-reading tablets: 5.5 and 10.8 inches, getting e-bookstore in DecemberSharp announces Galapagos e-reading tablets: 5.5 and 10.8 inches, getting e-bookstore in December originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 27 Sep 2010 03:53:00 EDT. Robot Archer iCub learns to shoot arrows, pierces our mortal heart (video)

How do you make a creepy baby robot downright cute? Give it an Indian headdress and teach it the bow-and-arrow, of course. The same team of researchers who brought us the pancake-flipping robot arm have imbued this iCub with a learning algorithm that lets it teach itself archery much the same as a human might do, by watching where the suction-tipped arrow lands and adjusting its aim for each subsequent shot. In this case, it obtained a perfect bullseye after just eight attempts. Watch it for yourself after the break, and ponder the fate of man -- how can we possibly stop an uprising of adorable robots that never miss?Continue reading Robot Archer iCub learns to shoot arrows, pierces our mortal heart (video)Robot Archer iCub learns to shoot arrows, pierces our mortal heart (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 25 Sep 2010 18:28:00 EDT. YouTube begins trial of live streaming platform, crowd goes wild

Filed under: Internet, Video, GoogleFrom the oh dear Lord, it's about time department: YouTube, over the next two days, is conducting a trial of its new live streaming platform.

This first test will see live content streamed by four of its partners: Howcast, Next New Networks (Barely Political), Rocketboom and Young Hollywood. Admittedly I haven't heard of any of them -- and I'm more interested in watching the season finale of True Blood -- but looking at their channel pages, they all seem to be popular.

The test will run for two days, after which live streaming will presumably be rolled out to the unwashed masses. While I'm sure there'll be tons of user-generated content, I'm more interested in whether YouTube can strike up broadcast deals with real broadcasters. TV shows, live music, news... this could be massive.

The live broadcast schedule for today is below -- see if anything catches your eye!

Amarok-based Clementine gets massive upgrade

Filed under: Audio, Open Source
Clementine is a great little audio player for Windows, and the recent update to version .5 has brought a lengthy list of new features. Not least among them is support for USB-connected MP3 players -- including iPods and iPhones!

My iPod touch 3G was recognized, but I couldn't get Clementine to establish a connection. My wife's little Sony E344, on the other hand, worked flawlessly.

What else has been added? There are better library control, organization, and sorting tools, automatic transcoding for connected MP3 players, and the ability to drag-and-drop songs between playlists. Want more? How about the ability to use a Wiimote to control Clementine?

Clementine's best new feature, however, has to be the All Glory to the Hypnotoad plug-in. Take the jump to see what it looks like, but don't stare too long -- lest you fall victim to the awesome powers of the Hypnotoad!

Pay a visit to the Clementine changelog for more details about what's new. Clementine runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux and is well worth a download.

Add Send to Instapaper to your Google Chrome context menu

Their official bookmarklet is handy for adding items to your queue, but you have to click through to the page before you can utilize it. Wouldn't it be nice if you had the option of right-clicking a link to send a page to Instapaper instead?

If Google Chrome is your browser of choice, the Send to Instapaper extension is exactly what you're after. Rather than merely replacing a bookmarklet with a browser action button, this extension adds an entry to your context menu. Right-click a link that you'd like to check out later on, and it's added to your queue.

You'll need to be signed in to your Instapaper account first, as the extension doesn't store your username or password.Add Send to Instapaper to your Google Chrome context menu originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 21 Sep 2010 08:30:00 EST. Twitter aware of onMouseOver hack for months, claims 17-year-old who exposed it

Filed under: Internet, Social Software, web 2.0
A 17-year-old schoolboy from Australia has taken the blame for the onMouseOver JavaScript Twitter exploit that caused havoc for a few hours on Wednesday.

Disclaiming innocence, Pearce Delphin -- who has the coolest name in the world -- says that he only discovered the vulnerability. "I did it merely to see if it could be done ... that JavaScript really could be executed within a tweet," he told AFP via email. The self-replicating worm came later, with the Guardian reporting that it was originally crafted by Masato Kinugawa and refined by Magnus Holm. Within hours, many mutations appeared -- shortly after, the Twitter offices in San Francisco groggily awoke, and the exploit was swiftly fixed.

Most importantly, however, Pearce says that Twitter knew about the problem for 'months.' It's not clear whether Pearce is talking authoritatively -- he might simply be stealing someone else's thunder -- but I'm sure Twitter will be quick to respond if he's wrong.

Update: Twitter actually fixed the bug last month, but seemingly made another change recently that brought it back.Twitter aware of onMouseOver hack for months, claims 17-year-old who exposed it originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 22 Sep 2010 10:20:00 EST. TiVo banking on the software business, delays DirecTV HD unit to 2011

It's been five years since TiVo first promised DirecTV customers an HD DVR and two years since the company reaffirmed that claim, so if you've been waiting patiently you probably know what we're going to say -- it's been delayed yet again. TiVo marketing VP Joe Miller told PC Magazine that the fabled DirecTiVo will actually appear "early next year," which should give you plenty of time to work out your rage. Before you storm off to your standard-definition video collection, however, there's another thing you might like to know: the executive also not-so-subtly suggested that TiVo's hardware business won't be a focus for long. In a series of increasingly telling quotes, Miller called software the company's "core competence," said it was "in our blood" and "the thing we do well," and even added that "the software is what we're all about." To be completely frank, TiVo has held the gold standard for DVR software for over a decade, but that's mostly because no one successfully stepped up to the plate -- not even TiVo itself, whose Premiere interface shipped the definition of half-baked. So when the company suggests that software is one of its strengths, please pardon a few chuckles from our corner of the room. Hide or move the orange button in Firefox 4 (updated)

Filed under: Mozilla, Browsers
With the release of the latest Firefox 4 beta build, the original userChrome.css hack fails to remove the big, orange menu button. Fortunately, Download Squad commenter poiru pointed out a thread on the Rainmeter forums that provides some working CSS! If you know what you're doing, head over to that thread and copy the CSS -- if not, read on for some instructions!

Open Firefox 4 beta 5 (or later)
Locate your Profile directory -- click Help > Troubleshooting Information and then Open Containing Folder
Now navigate to the Chrome directory
Copy userChrome-example.css
Rename your copy to userChrome.css
Open userChrome.css in your editor of choice and dump the following code in it:

margin-top:0px!important;
}
#appmenu-button-container {
position: fixed!important;
}
#navigator-toolbox[tabsontop="true"] #TabsToolbar {
padding-left: 110px !important;
}
.tabbrowser-strip {
height: 22px!important;
}
.tabbrowser-tab {
height: 22px!important; padding-right: 3px!important;
}
#toolbar-menubar {
margin: -27px 98px 2px 95px;
}
Alternatively, you can download my userChrome.css file -- but make sure you rename it beforehand!

You'll note that my code is slightly different from the CSS on the Rainmeter forums. I played with the positioning a little to make it "tighter." That said, I'm sure that with a little work you could make it look even nicer -- and if you do, please share your changes in the comments.Hide or move the orange button in Firefox 4 (updated) originally appeared on Download Squad on Sun, 12 Sep 2010 12:03:00 EST. Key Command Generator helps you generate beautiful shortcut key codes

Filed under: Design, Education
A while ago, we had a heated debate on our internal mailing list concerning the best way to note shortcut keys. Is it Ctrl+Enter? Maybe it should be a hyphen, so should it be Ctrl-Enter? And should there be a space? Should we capitalize, or not?
This might seem fussy, but when you're authoring a large body of text (or a collaborative blog), some standards have to be established. It's not just a matter of consistency for consistency's sake - the question is what makes the most sense for users.
Key Command Generator offers an interesting take on this problem. You fill in a simple form for your shortcut key, and you get an embeddable code. When you embed said code within your document, it shows up as a stylized "keyboard diagram" (as you can see in the screenshot).
While we won't be using it ourselves (because the output is pretty ginormous), I can certainly see how this can come in handy for other projects. I only wish it was a bit easier to use. A simpler syntax would be great, because then I could just change a few parameters in my code and avoid having to fill the form in every time. Perhaps something like shortcutkey.com/ctrl+shift+enter. Oh well, I guess there's always the HTML5 kbd element.Key Command Generator helps you generate beautiful shortcut key codes originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 23 Sep 2010 11:00:00 EST. Remember that HP Slate prototype video we happened upon just yesterday? The owner, who goes by the name x313xkillax on YouTube, is back with over eight more minutes of footage, including the packaging. According to the back of the box of this self-proclaimed business model, here's the official specs we're looking at: a 1.86GHz Intel Atom Z540 with GMA500 and Broadcom Crystal HD Enhanced Video accelerator, 8.9-inch WSVGA screen, 2GB DDR2 RAM, about 60GB storage capacity, Windows 7 Home Premium, 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth, SD card reader, and a 2-Cell 30WHr Lithium-ion Polymer battery. There are two cameras here, one in front and one in rear.

As shown via MS Paint, the screen can detect at least four fingers at a time. The browser is a bit laggy but does do pinch-to-zoom -- again, he calls it a prototype, so it may be better in the final production model. Also in the packaging? A handy dock for keeping your Slate comfy and upright -- it's even got kickstand, two USBs, and HDMI out. But hey, we're wasting your time, and you're the kind of person who wants to see this enterprise-bound tablet in action. Don't let us get in your way, it's just after the break.

Google's Schmidt says requiring stock Android would violate 'the principle of open source'

The suggestion has been made countless times that manufacturers who customize their devices' builds of Android (that is to say, nearly all of them) should have the decency to offer users the option of reverting to a completely clean, stock version of the platform if they so choose. The concept came up at a press lunch featuring Google CEO Eric Schmidt last week, and the dude responded with an interesting explanation for why they don't require that of their partners: "if we were to put those type of restrictions on an open source product, we'd be violating the principle of open source."

Of course, "the principle of open source" is open to wild differences in interpretation, the source of well over 20 years worth of intense debate in the developer community and the reason why countless types and versions of open source licenses exist (GPL, BSD, MIT, and so on). We'd also argue that the fact that Google is allegedly placing a range of arbitrary restrictions on certified devices (that is, those that feature the Market and other Google apps) gives them the platform they need to impose one more... but hey, Schmidt's an opinionated guy, and until Android stops growing by leaps and bounds, there's probably not a great capitalism-inspired argument that can be made here. Peep the video of the luncheon after the break.Continue reading Google's Schmidt says requiring stock Android would violate 'the principle of open source'Google's Schmidt says requiring stock Android would violate 'the principle of open source' originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 24 Sep 2010 12:12:00 EDT. Nitro PDF Reader is a powerful, free Adobe Reader alternative

Filed under: Business, Adobe
There are all sorts of compelling reasons to try an alternative PDF reader, security not being the least. Adobe Reader is also quite stingy with its functionality - you can't even annotate PDFs.
Nitro PDF Reader is an alternative reader with a modern-looking interface, and it offers generous annotation options. Unlike Foxit Reader, Nitro doesn't appear to watermark your PDF when you annotate it. You can highlight sections of the document, add text, add sticky-notes, and stamp your signature (not a digital signature - just a scanned one).
If you're lucky, you may also be able to extract graphics and text from your PDF. Ironically, I was unable to extract the images from Nitro's own sample PDF (the Welcome file that comes with the reader). Another thing you should know is that it's quite a memory hog. I tried the same document with both Foxit and Nitro; Foxit clocked in at 8MB, while Nitro consumed a whopping 63MB. Again, this is for the same exact one-page document. This is even more than Acrobat Reader 9.3, which consumed 50MB for that same document.
Still, if you've got a little RAM to spare (and most of us do), I think Nitro is a worthy contender, if only for its annotation capabilities and simple interface.Nitro PDF Reader is a powerful, free Adobe Reader alternative originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 21 Sep 2010 11:00:00 EST. Motorola XT720 releases on Wind Mobile

Wind Mobile, a rather new Canadian based wireless carrier, has released the Motorola XT720, a high-end Android device. This phone has a 3.7-inch display with a resolution of 480x854, 512MB of on board memory, an 8MP camera and will launch running Android 2.1. We have seen that other carriers plan to launch this device with Android 2.2 so hopefully this device will see an update shortly after launch as well. So if you are on Wind, or looking to switch, and want yourself a feature loaded Android device, this could be the perfect choice for you. Check it out for yourself today and save $20, bringing the price down to $430. Thanks James! [Wind Mobile]Posted originally at Android CentralSponsored by Android Cases and Accessories

Chrome Web Store preview adds Google Checkout payments, recommendations

Filed under: Google, Browsers
Google will be throwing open the doors to the Chrome Web Store some time in the coming months, and they're currently preparing for a whirlwind global tour to sing the praises of HTML5 and Chrome. On the tour, the Web Store will be a frequent topic of discussion and they've recently announced a couple important additions to the Store's developer preview.

Google Checkout payments are now supported, and developers can sign up for a merchant account on their dashboard page. Page previews have now been added -- so you can see how your app will look in the Store prior to publishing. Pages can be customized with header images and Google is also allowing devs to upload their own promotional banners (they'll be displayed when your app is feature in the store).

One downside for developers hoping to sell their apps in the Web Store is that Google Checkout might be the only payment option. Checkout still isn't available in that many countries, so international devs looking to deliver localized Web apps will have to wait for Google to make good on their expansion promises.

ed note: it's become an expected part of app stores, but as you can see in the screenshot the Chrome Web Store will offer recommendations based on what other users install.Chrome Web Store preview adds Google Checkout payments, recommendations originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 24 Sep 2010 10:00:00 EST. Nintendo Wii Remote Plus with built-in 'Plus' tipped in FlingSmash bundle?

We've been expecting a Wiimote with built-in MotionPlus for a while now -- after all, Nyko already builds the Wand+ with those succulent MotionPlus gyros built-in. Still, Nintendo has seemed slow on the uptake, outside of a mysterious FCC berth in May, so we were surprised to see this upcoming first party, MotionPlus-required FlingSmash title arrive on a GameStop order page with "Wii Remote Plus inside!" emblazoned on the box. Interestingly, the product description still mentions attaching the MotionPlus "accessory" to your Wii Remote, but the Wiimote in the picture does look just slightly different than normal with a curved bit of text below the Wii logo, and when Eurogamer pinged Nintendo Europe about it, a spokesperson said the Wii Remote Plus "is real" but "We have nothing to announce on this at the moment." Hopefully this all clears up soon enough so that millions of Wii owners can have an excuse to buy a new game in the noble name of hardware procurement.Nintendo Wii Remote Plus with built-in 'Plus' tipped in FlingSmash bundle? originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 24 Sep 2010 09:38:00 EDT.
