Bizzy launches check-out app, helps you find places to shop

There's a new check-in app in town, but Bizzy isn't just about letting friends know where you are -- it's also about rating businesses where you just completed a purchase.

The app also acts as a discovery service, allowing you to see where users with tastes similar to your own have been checking out. Location updates can be posted to Facebook or Twitter, and so far the service has gathered information on more than 140,000 individual places.

In order to build out your profile, Bizzy will also ask you to select local businesses which are already among your favorites, so you can receive more targeted recommendations from the get-go.

Bizzy is available for iOS and Android devices. Hit the links below to download!

Arkon Universal Tablet Stand Review

iPads are wonderful devices. You can work or play on an iPad, at least until your hands get tired of holding it. There are a lot of stands available for iPads, all with their own pluses and minuses. Mac OS X requires a helper program to connect to Android 3.0 tablets

Android File Transfer, Honeycomb OS X bonding
Android 3.0 Honeycomb, the OS that runs on the recently-released Motorola Xoom, will not bond with Mac OS X unless you install a helper program on your PC first.

The program, which is aptly named Android File Transfer, provides third-party Media Transfer Protcol (MTP) support, which Mac OS X doesn't natively provide. MTP started off as a Windows Media Player technology, which is probably why Apple doesn't support it, but today it's represented by a standard USB device class and an extension of its precursor, PTP.

MTP support is definitely a step up as far as Android is concerned. Rather than 'turn on mass storage mode,' which locks local apps out of your SD card, MTP allows both the phone and the PC to access your phone's filesystem at the same time. Hopefully Medial Transfer Protocol will find its way to the smartphone version of Android in due course

Incidentally, it's possible that the upcoming version of OS X, Lion, could support MTP. If anyone has Lion, and a Motorola Xoom, we'd love to know if you've had any luck connecting them.

Ubuntu 11.10 will be called Oneiric Ocelot

An ocelot
Canonical, proving yet again that its idea of prime bed time reading is leafing through a thesaurus, has officially named Ubuntu 11.10 as 'Oneiric Ocelot'. Feature-wise, there is nothing new to report: 11.10 will introduce Qt support, and the Unity 2D window manager for low-power devices.

Mark Shuttleworth, the founder of Canonical, has a fantastic blog post that discusses how the developers of Ubuntu arrived at Oneiric Ocelot. Oddball Octopus was almost chosen, because it has been eight years since Ubuntu was first conceived. Osculant Orangutan was mooted too, due to the welcoming nature of the Ubuntu community.

The ocelot, which is a cute wild cat, was eventually chosen -- apparently because it represents the "discipline" that will be needed to drive innovation in Ubuntu 11.10. Oneiric, if you're wondering (leave a comment if you've ever used 'oneiric' in conversation), means 'dreamy.'

In other news, Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal, which is due to be released in April, recently reached Alpha 3.

HP: You Get WebOS, You Get WebOS - Every PC Gets WebOS

Mobile is getting grounded, HP CEO Leo Apotheker has announced. In 2012, HP will include the mobile operating system it purchased with Palm in 2009, webOS, on every PC it ships, along with the latest version of stationary computing standard Microsoft Windows. HP seeks to expand the webOS platform's reach and attract more developers, Apotheker explained.

From ?Businesses? To ?Tools?: The Twitter API ToS Changes

Yesterday, Twitter made a swift and sweeping move to alter their ecosystem. In an email to developers, Twitter laid out the new rules. Essentially, third-party developers should no longer try to compete with Twitter on clients; instead they should focus on things like data and specific verticals for tweets. Not surprisingly, there's quite a bit of backlash against this maneuver. In making these changes, Twitter also had to chance their API Terms of Service. And we thought it would be interesting to compare the old ToS to the new one. We can do that thanks to the magic of Google, which has a cached copy of the ToS dated January 3, 2011.

Instagram Gets a Tilt-Shift Effect and a More Useful News Feed [Apps]

Instagram, the popular (and ever getting more popular) photo sharing app, just got a nice new update for SXSW (because if you've got a "cool" app and you're not updating it for SXSW, then you might as well just shut down shop altogether). First, for photos, there's a new tilt-shift effect, resulting in those sort of miniature train model-looking scenes that you're probably used to from HP advertisements and Vimeo videos and the like. It's Instagram's first foray into an effect, per se, as opposed to a simple filter, so that's fun. And then there's the new news feed—it's been revamped to be more like Facebook's, emphasizing your friends' activity over your own in an effort to help you find new people to follow. The app, as always, is free. [iTunes, Screenshots via TechCrunch] More »

Add a keyboard shortcut to a Chrome bookmark or bookmarklet

Add a keyboard shortcut to a bookmark in Chrome 9
It occurred to us, after writing yesterday's list of Chrome keyboard shortcuts, that there was one glaring omission: bookmark shortcuts.

Not only does the Bookmark Bar take up valuable real estate, but no one really wants to click through folders of bookmarks to find what you're looking for.

Now, Firefox has 'Smart bookmarks', which lets you add a keyword to a bookmark. Chrome, however, only lets you assign keywords (and thus keyboard shortcuts) to search engines.

Fortunately, with a little bit of hacking, that doesn't matter.

Warner Bros. renting movies on Facebook for $3

The Dark Knight rental on Facebook
Warner Bros., finding yet another corner piece of the Social Networking Jigsaw, has begun renting movies on Facebook for 30 Facebook Credits, or $3.

The films are packaged as apps -- like FarmVille and CityVille -- but it really is as simple as heading to a page, using 30 Credits, and watching the movie. You can watch the movie as many times as you like for 48 hours, after which the rental terminates. You can stop and start the movie whenever you like, too.

Facebook Credits, if they somehow passed you by (there must be a few people who don't play FarmVille, right?) are Facebook's new all-encompassing currency. Every virtual good transaction (such as in-app purchases, or renting a movie) must use Facebook Credits. Facebook, like Apple, takes a 30% cut of all purchases with Credits.

For now, the only movie available to rent on Facebook is Batman: The Dark Knight, but more should begin to appear soon. If you 'Like' a movie, you should see a status update when it becomes available to rent (see the Dark Knight page for an example).

How to block specific friends from reading a Facebook status update

Facebook granular status updates
This week's set of tech tips are all about the most popular website in the world: Facebook. For more tips, check our tips index!

Facebook, despite the blogosphere's perpetual bickering, actually has good, granular privacy controls. You can control exactly who can see each section of your profile, and easily block specific people from even finding your profile.

One lesser-known feature, however, is that you can control who can read each and every one of your status updates. You've probably seen the padblock below the status update box, but if you click it, and then Customize, you can block specific people from reading your update!

Maybe you're not quite ready to unfriend someone, or perhaps you're simply trying to arrange a surprise birthday party for one of your friends -- either way, it's a great little feature. As a commenter points out, it's also rather handy if you want to block family members from reading... sensitive... things.

Now, if only you could control who could read your posts on your friends' pages...

Jetbus is a retro-tastic physics game, with a bus

jetbus
Once upon a time, there used to be a DOS game with a caveman and a human powered helicopter. The caveman would shuttle around the screen, madly trying to get customers to where they wanted to go.

Jetbus is not that game, but it's obviously inspired by it. You're driving a yellow school bus which has jets. I guess the jet engine takes quite a bit of space inside the bus, because you can only pick up one person at a time.

There are several doors on the screen, each with its own number. As you pick up a person, the status bar at the bottom of the screen shows you which number door you have to take them to.

You must fly your bus carefully, because if it gets bumped around too much, you lose. You earn money on each level, and can visit the garage to buy better jets and damping, power-ups, or even a whole new vehicle.

So while this game isn't made as well as the original that inspired it, it does provide a few minutes of fun. And now, which one of you guys remembers the original and feels like pointing to it in the comments?

Lightbox Photos Wants To Be Your New Android Camera App (SXSW)

Although Android adoption is growing at a huge clip compared to the iPhone (not hard, since there are so many more devices and plans), iPhone apps still remain the benchmark for the smartphone app experience. In part this is down to the fact that many companies build an iPhone app first and an Android version some time later, which is often inferior in user experience. Part of the reason is that little things like the pull-down-to-refresh features that are often in Phone apps come default with the iOS platform. But to make that kind of feature work in an Android app you have to build it from the ground up. That means there is a space for a creator of ridiculously good Android apps. Step forward Thai Tran and Nilesh Patel with Lightbox, their new startup which has taken a $1.1 million seed round from some of the top VCs and Angels in the UK and US. A private beta launches this week at SXSW, with the founders in attendance handing out invitation codes to the private beta. The app will be presented at the Team Android Choice Awards. You can sign up here to get on the invite list for the app here.

G Data CloudSecurity offers free protection from Web malware

free web malware protection
You may not have heard of G Data, but the German security software developer consistently posts top marks in antivirus tests. Now, we know many of you don't like toolbars, but G Data CloudSecurity for Firefox and Internet Explorer is one that might be good enough to recommend to your friends and family who need help avoiding malware on the Web.

CloudSecurity offers functionality much like the browser components offered by many antivirus and anti-malware apps (including AVG, Avast, and Norton). Once installed, CloudSecurity checks Web pages for all kinds of malicious activity -- from phishing to malware-infested code and downloads. It's also worth noting that the G Data toolbar doesn't noticeably delay the opening of new tabs in Internet Explorer -- IE9's add-on manager reports a total time of about half a second.

If you know people who have trouble resisting the allure of fakeAV pop-ups and Facebook scam links, you may just want to install CloudSecurity for them to provide a little extra protection.
